roadside picnic shelter Posted on July 19, 2013 By Rick Black

Ellis_CoA dozen of these structures exist at the Ellis County Texas Safety Rest Area along IH-35, just south of Waxahachie. We were surprised to find how accommodating and pleasant these durable concrete and steel shelters are for a picnic. It actually¬†felt cool sitting there on a recent hundred degree day – due to the generous overhanging roof, the thermal mass of the concrete, and a ‘window’ seat oriented toward the prevailing breeze. The acrylic white coating of the walls and table top are the perfect surface to maintain cleanliness.¬†There’s even a pedestal on the opposite side to set an ice chest or hibachi with a view to the western prairie. Spartan, gracious, and beautiful to boot!
